Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

Jesus Christ is the Redeemer, Messiah and the Light of the world. The three titles mentioned are firmly befitting of Him. This is because they fully represent His essence and what He did for humanity. We shall study the three titles comprehensively as we get along in this teaching.

The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew-Aramaic word Yeshua (Yahusha, Yahushua) which means ‘’Yahweh is Salvation’’. The name Christ comes from the Greek word Christos. It is actually a title and means ‘’The anointed One’’ or ‘’Messiah’’ in Hebrew.

Jesus Christ walked on the earth in the flesh and God the Father had put His Spirit in Him. He demonstrated His utmost love in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Our Heavenly Father not only saved our souls, but also came in Christ Jesus to make us know Him more. He came in Christ Jesus to restore our relationship with Him. With the Spirit of the Father in Him, He was fully man and fully God and lives forever.

Jesus Christ in the flesh was born (BC 4 – AD 30) in Bethlehem. It is a town in Judea which is found several kilometers South of Jerusalem. There have been several past conflicts between Israel and her neighbors. For that reason Bethlehem now finds herself as a present-day City in Palestine’s West bank.

Jesus Christ, born of a virgin birth and conceived by the Holy Spirit.

A redeemer and Messiah had to come to the world in our likeness. Moreover, for Christ to have achieved His mission, he first had to be a teacher, pastor, prophet, evangelist and an apostle (the Chief Apostle) as sent by the Father. This He did by choosing and ordaining 12 apostles (Matthew 3:18-22, 10:1,2, Mark 1:16-20, 3:14-19) and 70 others (Luke 10:1)

Apart from bringing the Kingdom of God to us, He had to re-write the wrongs that had been done by the then church. The church by then had been sieged by religious leaders who never served God in truth and spirit. They served their own interests in the guise of keeping the Laws of Moses. Many of such churches had degenerated into paganism and idolatry (See Matthew 15:7-9. 23:1-37). There was opposition from the very church leaders and they eventually had Christ crucified on the cross. Despite that, the gospel was spread to many parts. Today the gospels have been preached over every surface of the world.

There are many reasons why Jesus Christ had to come as a man. However, the most important one was that He was going to become the sacrifial lamb for the world. (John 1:29, Philippians 2:6,7, Hebrews 8:6, 9:12-15, 1st peter 1:18,19). Justice demands penalty for sins (Psalms 89:14). Christ being sinless, and the only begotten Son of the Father was Most qualified.

He was born to Mary after she conceived by the Holy Spirit, and was born through virgin birth (Luke 1:26-35). By then, Mary was already espoused to Joseph of the lineage of David. Joseph had not received revelation about Mary conceiving by the Holy Spirit and almost divorced her. However, an angel of the Lord explained to him and he believed (Matthew 1:18-20). Biblical history tells us that His parents had to flee Bethlehem to Egypt. This was because King Herod wanted to kill the Christ as a child. They came back to Israel but they had to raise Christ in Nazareth. Joseph was a carpenter and as Jesus Christ grew up, He learned the trade from him. Jesus Christ had four brothers born after Him as follows as per Matthew 13:55, Mark 3:31, 6:3, Luke 8:19.

  • Joseph (Joses)
  • Simeon
  • James
  • Judas

He also had sisters but their names are not mentioned. Matthew 13:56, Mark 6:3.
